Benjamin Bridge's NOVA 7 Sells Out Again

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 (Gaspereau Valley, Nova Scotia) - NOVA 7 by Benjamin Bridge, the Nova Scotia wine phenomenon from 2008, roared back into the Nova Scotia market place in early June, with more than four times the production volume of its debut release, selling out at the winery by the end of summer. Inspired by the European tradition of lightly sparkling, off-dry wines, the new wine was described by the Globe and Mail's wine critic, Beppi Crosariol, as "...a magnificent Moscato d'Asti-styled off-dry white wine..." in his 2008 New Year's review of wines to watch in 2009.

As if this were not enough good news for wine lovers in Nova Scotia, Benjamin Bridge is thrilled to be nearing the release of its, perhaps, most spectacular wine offering thus far, expected some time in early 2010 - a Brut Reserve 2004 and a Blanc de Noirs 2004 - hand crafted from 100% Nova Scotia grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, in the laborious 'classic method', the wine making style of Champagnes.

"In the world of fine wines, the most important factor in determining a wine's quality is the ripeness of its grapes. In virtually no region of the world, outside of Champagne, do grapes reach perfect maturity... the right balance of sugars and acidity to make a cuvée de prestige Champagne, but we're achieving the same window of ripeness for our grapes, and we're getting those levels consistently in Nova Scotia," says Benjamin Bridge wine consultant, Peter Gamble, an international boutique winery consultant.

Gerry McConnell, partner in Benjamin Bridge explains "Early on, when we realized that Nova Scotia has the perfect climatic conditions to achieve the precise ripeness for grapes required to make sparkling wines of the finest and rarest quality, we set out to make the finest classical method sparkling wine outside of Champagne." With a team of winemakers, including internationally renowned sparkling-wine specialist Raphael Brisbois, formerly of Champagne, who has crafted sparkling wines for Piper-Heidsieck and Iron Horse Vineyards in California, to name a few, Benjamin Bridge has been making sparkling wines since 2002, which critics are calling, in early reviews "stunning" "spectacular" and "serious".

Late this summer, Benjamin Bridge's resident winemaker, Jean-Benoit Deslauriers, disgorged the wines — a process whereby the yeast sediment is removed and a finishing dosage is added, after which, over time, the wines gain in complexity. While many Champagnes are released shortly after disgorgement, higher quality Champagnes require more time post-disgorgement to allow the wine to become more fully integrated and more complex. Benjamin Bridge is following the path of the finest quality cuvées for its vintage sparkling wines.

David Lawrason, Founder of Wine Access magazine and the Canadian Wine Awards summed up some of the high expectations that are riding on Benjamin Bridge after a preview tasting of the sparkling wines, "the future of Nova Scotia as an international magnet, however may rest upon a sparkling wine project (again all organic) called Benjamin Bridge... I can't say enough about how good these wines are..."

Limited quantities of Nova 7, as well as Borealis Icewine, Taurus and Nexus Rosé are still available at select NSLC and private wine stores in Nova Scotia.
