Benjamin Bridge's 2010 NOVA 7 faces unprecedented demand
(Thursday, May 5, 2011) Gaspereau, Nova Scotia – Benjamin Bridge released the fourth vintage of its popular NOVA 7 this past Monday, May 2nd across Nova Scotia to fans eagerly awaiting the wine's release since last year's sell out. In what appears to be unprecedented demand, most of the wine has been spoken for by local retailers who report customers have been asking for the wine for the past ten months. "It's a phenomenon...we don't see it with any other wine we sell...customers were lined up on the first morning and walked out of our store with full cases,"
said Kathryn Harding, Manager of Bishop's Cellar, one of Halifax's four private wine stores.
Producing over 2500 cases this year, ten times the volume of its debut release, local wine writers are projecting another province-wide sell-out. In a recent blog following a preview of the wine, Halifax wine writer and professional Sommelier, Jonathan Wilson wrote: "...these wines will disappear soon after their release...Go and drink as much as you can so your memory will be saturated by the time the 2011 vintage is released...Your patio was built for wines like this."
Resident winemaker, Jean-Benoit Deslauriers is especially proud of this year's vintage because it highlights the effect of last summer's heat wave; "In our pursuit of crafting terrroir-driven wines comes a responsibility to highlight the attributes of each specific vintage...last year's very warm summer translated into a lot of fruit character. Very ripe grapes produced the wine's extreme aromatics and fruit forward character in this year's vintage..."
Originally conceived by international winemaking consultant Peter Gamble, Nova 7 is a classic example of what wine aficionados call a 'terroir' wine. Gamble explains:
"Nova 7 is a flat-out tribute to one of the most spectacular winegrowing areas I've ever encountered. Nova Scotia's terrain and climate create wines with some of the most vibrant flavours and aromas you'll ever taste. Bright and crisp, with startling freshness and piercing aromatics, I know of no other vineyards on the planet capable of producing the very precise flavours that characterize Nova 7. And the wonderful nuances that each new vintage offers sustain the excitement ...for the winemaking team, and for an increasingly voracious group of passionate Nova 7 followers!"
Ron Crooks, Manager of the NSLC's flagship Port of Wines store in downtown Halifax described the wine in a release to customers this week as: "...a wonderful glass of fun; a great Nova Scotian wine that has summer written all over it!...a stellar vintage."
The 2010 vintage of NOVA 7 is now available at select NSLC stores throughout Nova Scotia, at each of the private wine stores, directly from the winery (wines@benjaminbridge.com) and available at the Halifax Seaport Farmer's Market on Saturdays. Winemaker Jean-Benoit Deslauriers will be signing NOVA 7 posters at the winery's booth on May 7th 2011 at the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market.
Benjamin Bridge, a sparkling wine house located in Nova Scotia's picturesque Gaspereau Valley, released its much anticipated, inaugural Méthode Classique sparkling wines in Nova Scotia in November 2010 to glowing reviews, selling out within a short couple of months. A subsequent release is planned for Christmas 2011.
